Roman Liubyi’s “Iron Butterflies” screening in Paris
On Saturday 8 June at 7pm at Bercy Beaucoup, the French-Ukrainian organisation Babylon Villeneuve is organising a screening of the film “Iron Butterflies” by Roman Liubyi, in the presence of the director. The screening will be followed by a concert by Ukrainian pianist Sasha Morozova, a discussion with the director and a cocktail.
“Iron Butterflies”, a metaphorical feature documentary, is centered around the investigation into Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, which was shot down in 2014 over Ukraine by the Russian anti-aircraft system.
Roman Liubyi looks back at the Russian government’s increasingly more implausible and bizarre denial, showing how lies and violence are self-perpetuating, and what is at stake if those lies are not confronted.
The film premiered in 2023 at Sundance, one of the leading independent film festivals in the US. The European premiere took place at the Berlinale. The film was screened in The Hague at the Movies That Matter festival, and was also included in the Horizons programme at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
Roman Liubyi is a Ukrainian director, editor, animator and musician. His first feature-length documentary, ‘War Notebook’, is a surreal cinematic journey along the frontline of the war between Ukraine and Russia, edited from footage filmed by Ukrainian soldiers in 2014. Since 2013, Roman has been a member of the Babylon’13 film collective. Two of his most recent projects, the animation film “Unholy power” and the documentary “Maidan Time Machine”, were supported by the European Solidarity Fund for Ukrainian Films.
