SYNOPSIS

My father, a Soviet ballet dancer on ice, went on tour to the West and filmed during the crucial period of the 80s and 90s. Rediscovering our family archive, I tell the story of Ukrainian society growing up – between the illusion of “Western paradise” and the troubles of the USSR.

    Valentyn Vasyanovych

    Maria Stoianova is a Kyiv-based independent filmmaker. After finishing her education with an MA in Cultural Studies (Kyiv) and an MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology (Budapest), she worked in different positions within the Ukrainian film industry. She has directed and edited several short documentaries, among which is the award-winning film Ma (2017), which was screened at Ji.hlava IDFF, Open City Documentary Festival, Astra FF, and many others. She has finished her studies at the Sergey Bukovsky Film Program and is currently working on her first feature-length documentary project.
