SYNOPSIS

At the start of the invasion of Ukraine, the Russian troops had occupied the site of one of the worst nuclear disasters in history: the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. Based on an in-depth documentation of the aftermath of the Russian occupation of Chornobyl, witness testimonies, and footage from the CCTV cameras from the Zone, our documentary reconstructs this act of nuclear terror and its repercussions for global security.

    THE DIRECTOR

    Valentyn Vasyanovych
    Oleksiy Radynski is a Ukrainian filmmaker and writer. After post-graduate work in Cultural Studies at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, he received several grants for visual culture research and cultural studies. Concurrently, he conceived collectively group exhibitions, the most recent of which were showed at the Berlin Haus der statistic, the Warsaw Biennale and the Vilnius National Gallery of Art.
    An alumni of the Berlinale Talent Campus, Oleksyi has directed eight short films. In 2015, People who came to power won the main prize in the national competition of Docudays Film Festival and Façade Colour: Blue, in 2019, received the Audience award of the Kyiv International Short Film Festival. His first feature documentary, Infinity according to Florian, was voted Best Ukrainian documentary at Docs Against Gravity IFF and Best Art Film at Parnu IFF. In 2023, his short film Chornobyl 22, exploring the same topic as War in Chornobyl, was awarded the Grand Prix at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival.
